Marxmail also includes polemics against people on the
left who've really and truly left the left, such as writer
Christopher Hitchens and Marc Cooper, so occasional
discussions of the devolution of the Socialist Workers
Party may not seem quite so out of line, in my view.
Except that I have received complaints from time to time about the
obsessional posting about some article from the Militant. Nobody ever
complains about a zinger aimed at Hitchens and Cooper. Let's put it this
way. Hitchens and Cooper write in publications that are read by hundreds of
thousands, if not millions, of people. Like Atlantic Monthly or Vanity
Fair. They constitute important elements of the American political landscape.
The American SWP is a moribund organization that exercises ZERO influence
on the antiwar movement. They remind me of the Workers League organizing
classes on dialectics in 1969 as the most important way to oppose the war
in Vietnam. They are a sideshow, like the geek at the carnival eating the
heads of live chickens.
