[Marxism] NYTimes.com: Opposition to U.S. Makes Chávez a Hero to Many

This article from yesterday's NYT is a good example of the major leftward shift
in politics that has happened in Latin America. It shows how Chavez and the
Bolivarian revolution are at the center of politics for the whole hemisphere.
One feature of this is of course the clear anti-imperialist leadership that
Chavez is providing. Another major factor is oil. The Venezuelan revolution is
the first socialist revolution in history to have the economic resources to
raise the standard of living in the early stages of the taking power. It can
demonstrate the power of allocating resources based on human need rather than
profit ( Missions, credit etc.). It is what allows the country to experience a
time of protracted coexistence with the capitalist class while it builds a new
state. The revolution in Russia China and S.E. Asia all resulted in short term
economic impoverishment. This was a major factor in the rise of a priledged
bureucratic layer intent on getting its needs met am
