Re: [Marxism] Posada story finally hits US national television network news

I've been discussing media coverage extensively here:

<http://lefti.blogspot.com/2005_05_01_lefti_archive.html#111635366385926945>

MANY media outlets, including CNN and PBS, have said (incorrectly) that Cuba
was demanding the U.S. send Posada to Cuba. Jim Lehrer on PBS's "NewsHour"
characterized today's Havana march as an "anti-U.S." march.

The descriptions of Posada Carriles have run the gamut - "Cuban militant",
"Cuban exile", "Castro opponent", a "former CIA operative", an "alleged
anti-Castro terrorist", a "Castro foe", and an "accused Cuban bomber". The
simple description "terrorist" or "convicted terrorist" appear nowhere. Can
you imagine the U.S. media describing Osama bin Laden as an "Islamic
militant" or a "Saudi exile"?

In keeping with these descriptions, the norm in media coverage has been to
emphasize Posada's denials of involvement with the Cubana bombing and now
even with the Havana hotel bombings, which he previously had taken credit
for. I have not heard as part of a single news report any reference to the
20 (some say 33) pounds of plastic explosive he was caught with in Panama
(and for which he was convicted), nor even any mention of his escape from
prison in Venezuela.
