In other words, you can't make omelette without breaking eggs.

Interestingly, William Hinton who was probably as far as anyone
could get from being a "China basher," in the end evaluated Deng
and co-travellers as restorationists and, despite his 50 years of
association with the PRC, Hinton stepped back from giving the
restoration a "progressive" tint (a number of articles by and
about Hinton have (re)appeared in MR recently).
