I read Lisa Fittko's book, Solidarity and Treason, a few years ago. The most
vivid part of her memoir is her recounting the early, ultimately
unsuccessful, efforts of local CP leaders like herself and her husband Hans
to build an undeground resistance movement shortly after the Nazi takeover.
Hans was the leader of the "Potsdamer" cell, tough activists from the
militant working-class quarter in Berlin. There's an especially tense moment
as the Gestapo is mounting the stairs to their apartment, and the couple are
gathering their few belongings, preparing to escape to Switzerland. "No need
to hurry, no need to hurry", Hans reassures Lisa, a good illustration of the
remarkable composure and self-discipline strong people exhibit in the most
terrifying circumstances. Her book would make a great movie, but their
politics are no longer fashionable in film circles today.
