George Galloway is the only successful Respect candidate. Two
others, where they came second are given below. This was the
party that was going to reflect the millions against the war and
break the mould of British politics, don't forget. Also the CPB
results.

Jesus man, whats eating you? Actually there were 3 second places
+ almost a fourth second place in Poplar and Canning Town. The best results in
London
are all in geographically contiguous areas - it is/was a working class
heartland for Labour - not any more.
I'd love to see a breakdown of booths because some of these areas like
Poplar/Isle of Dogs are partially yuppie and others are
both white and asian working class.

Actually I found the BNP results a bit chilling. Look at Dagenham.. the east
london working class seat that RESPECT didn't run in.. the BNP doubled their
vote to 10%.
Its a warning of what can happen if the LEFT indulges in sectarianism.

I'm not 100% comfortable with all the politics of RESPECT, but I'm 95% onvinced
that this has been a great step forward for the Left.
A lot depends now on what Respect will do on the ground to further build
support. The firefighters union has just elected a left wing leader who wants
to take on New Labours attacks on public services like the firefighters. And
the firefighters donated to RESPECT. Its a perfect opportunity for RESPECT to
gain
further within the working class
