For a gloriously sympathetic reference to Saladin, see Dante, _Hell_,
Canto IV, the limbo of unbaptized infants & virtuous pagans. Saladin
stands out there because all the others lived before xtianity:
That Brutus who drove out the proud Tarquin;
Lucrece, Corneiia, Julia, Marcia four
Together, and by himself the Saladin.
When I had raised my eyes a little more,
I saw the Master* of those who know: he sate
Amid the sons Philosophy to him bore.
(Binyon tr., IV, 127-32)
