In 1977, after the SLP convention, the SWP did have a perspective of
encouraging the SLP to come into the SWP enmasse. The SLP rejected this,
unsurprisingly. The SLP in '77 said their position of a plague on both your
houses, during the Vietnam war was wrong and they should have oppossed US
intervention in Vietnam. At that time the SWP had a "regroupment" orientation
(on their terms to be sure). It was the '77 convention that the 35 or so
members of the Revolutionary Marxists Committee joined the SWP as a group. As I
remember, the SWP was offering rather generous terms, organizationally to the
SLP regarding NC and PC seats. The big stumbling block for the SLP was the
question of democratic centralism. Despite my criticisms of the SWP, I can't
fault them for this regroupment, limited as it was, orientation. Presently, it
would appear that the SWP is closer to Workers World, or the split of group
from WWP than to the SLP.
