[Marxism] A last word from Barbara Ehrenreich
Dear Louis,
Sorry I had no idea that my reference to the janjaweed riding camels was
an ethnic slur. My partner, Shakoor Aljuwani, was equally surprised at
this. I only mentioned the mode of locomotion to indicate their military
vulnerability.
I never said a thing about Iraqi men being rapists. I did say I am not
filled with solidarity toward those parts of the Iraqi insurgency that
represent misogynist versions of Islam.
And of course I spend most of my time berating my own country for its
crimes around the world, as you probably realize. In the 60s, tho, the
opposition to US imperialism was coming from at least nominally socialist
and pro-women's-liberation movements. Now, at least outside of Latin
America, much of the opposition is rooted in a terrifyingly repressive
Islamicism.
And what about Darfur? Sure, it's not the only horror story in Africa now.
But to my mind it would be pretty racist to brush off the rape and murder
of Sudanese women who are derided for their skin color even as they are
being assaulted. What would you propose to do about this situation, seriously?
In (I hope, some sort of) solidarity,
Barbara
