You might also want to consider that the "victory by Islamists and
Baathist-remnants," that you are worried about, could also come out of the
political process that we see taking place in Iraq. In fact, there are
"islamists," "baathists," even "communists," on both sides of the
conflict. There are plenty of very hardcore Muslims and some
"ex"-Baathists that are cooperating with the occupation forces.
This a very important point that in all the zeal to explain why talking
about "the resistance" is problematic I, and I guess others, forgot to
mention!!!
I agree completely, and would add that there are also forces that appear to
resist and are actually doing some power plays and people who seem to
cooperate and are actually resisting.
Complicated indeed, which is why facile explanations don't cut it for me as
analisys.
