[Ahem.

Allow me a bit of arrogance, just for this time.
------------------------------------------------------------

No way.

While Chavez finds the events in Ecuador sad, the Venezuela's position
is one of caution and careful observation. That observation includes the
recognition of the popular basis for discontent with Gutierrez's
government:

"Yet, while Chávez has continued to be a hero for the country's poor,
Gutiérrez has largely been perceived to have switched camps, instituting
a structural adjustment program that removed subsidies on basic
necessities and reduced social spending; promoting a Free Trade
Agreement with the US; and supporting Plan Colombia, the US
counter-terrorism initiative in Ecuador's northern neighbor, which has
seen over US$2 billion in mostly military aid to Colombia over the past
three years. "

and Analysis

The fact that "middle classes" (such as they are in Ecuador),
professionals, students come forward and appear to lead the rebellion
speaks both to the stress placed upon the entire economic and social
fabric of Ecuador, and the current lack of a clearly articulated,
emerging class specific program that confronts this general stress...

Such a program would finesse the wedge, the opportunity,
international capital sees in the pretty meaningless "Out With Them
All" demand through a series of proposals that would concentrate on
reversing the real declines in living standards and prospects for
development by nullifying the IMF stabilization pacts, withdrawal from
the World Bank, cancellation of the international debt, nationalization
of the energy industry under workers control, cancellation of US-Ecuador
military agreements, accessing the oil stabilization fund etc.

No one thinks such a program would have immediate success-- on the
contrary-- but the material forces, the conflicts at the heart of the
current upheaval, make the simple introduction of a class based program,
in opposition to the phony "democratic" verbiage,
more than opportune.
