“It’s a Wobbly Year”: An Interview With Paul Buhle On The IWW
Derek Seidman
2005 marks the centennial of the founding of the most bold, radical, and
egalitarian mass union in US history: the Industrial Workers of the
World (IWW, also known as the Wobblies). Big Bill Haywood, “The Rebel
Girl” Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Joe Hill, Free Speech fights, the
Patterson and Lawrence strikes, “Solidarity Forever”, and so much more:
the legacy of the Wobblies is one of the most enduring things in the
American radical tradition. Paul Buhle, a professor of American
Civilization at Brown University and a leading scholar of American
radical history, is co-author of the new Wobblies! A Graphic History of
the Industrial Workers of the World

Bulgakov, Thompson and Free Will:Reflections on American Complacency
William Montgomery
In one of my favorite books, /The Master and Margarita/ by Mikhail
Bulgakov, the most quotable and memorable line is: “manuscripts don’t
burn.” The Master is a writer who is plagued by both his own mental
illness and the oppression of Stalin’s regime in 1930s Moscow. He burns
his treasured manuscript in an effort to hide it from the Soviet
authorities and cleanse his own mind from the troubles the work has
brought him. Bulgakov’s own life is reflected in the Master’s character,
as he in fact burned an early copy of The Master and Margarita for much
the same reasons.

Trip to Wonderland, Anyone? Hypocrisy of the Christian Right
Jason Miller
An article that appeared in The Kansas City Star yesterday stirred some
serious doubts in my mind about the rationality of those leading the
Christian Right movement. Nina Easton of the Boston Globe indicated in
the article that key leaders of the conservative Christian movement met
in Washington this past week to formulate their strategy to take control
of the judiciary. They castigated George Bush, brother Jeb, Dick Cheney,
and Bill Frist for failing to take a strong enough stand against the
courts in the Terry Schiavo situation. Subverting the Constitution by
abusing legislative authority to interfere in a judicial matter was not
enough to satisfy these dogmatic radicals? Merely the implication that
Bush and his compatriots were too moderate in their actions is a
testament to the perverse worldview of the Christian Right. I also noted
that this article was relegated to page 3 of my paper's front page
section, an indication that the mainstream media continues to downplay
the threat that this growing movement of radicals poses to our nation.

Howard Dean Becomes Leader of the Other Pro-War Party Dean on Iraq:
“We're There and We Can't Get Out”
Kevin Zeese
It didn't take long, the former anti-war presidential candidate has now
become the pro-occupation leader of the Democratic Party. Just when a
majority of the public is saying the Iraq War is not worth it, Howard
Dean the new leader of the Democratic Party is saying: “Now that we're
there, we're there and we can't get out.”
Like the good partisan he is Dean blames Bush for a war most in his
party voted for and an occupation that most in his party recently voted
to continue to fund. Of the President Dean said: “The president has
created an enormous security problem for the United States where none
existed before. But I hope the president is incredibly successful with
his policy now that he's there.”
