[Marxism] Supporting the resistance?
Louis, quoting Alan Maas, informs us:
"Most antiwar organizations today do agree on an all-important demand, at
least on paper -- immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq."
Would that it were true. I don't know who qualifies as an "antiwar
organization"; I suppose if you agree to only call those who call for
immediate withdrawal as really antiwar than the problem solves itself.
However, just two days ago I listened to a debate on Democracy Now! between
Naomi Klein and Eric Gustafson on precisely this subject (transcript here:
<http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/04/20/1427259>). Even the
"pro-immediate withdrawal" advocate (Klein) wasn't actually for immediate
withdrawal, and Gustafson even less so, expressing a position which could
come out of George Bush's mouth but just as well out of many in the antiwar
movement: "There's so much still that has to be done in order for us to be
able to pull out and leave a stable Iraq behind." There's lots more if you
can stomach it (and you should, because it expresses very real sentiments in
the antiwar movement).
