[Marxism] Under the influence of fascists?

A representative of California Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez suggests that the immigrant Schwarzenegger is inspired by the semi-fascist Minuteman Project. Last week, the Daily Show's Jon Stewart commented on the nuttiness of a Congressman who sympathized with the murder of federal judges by fascist individuals who were frustrated with the courts's rulings on abortion and the Terri Schiavo case.

Governor talks of closing Mexico border

SAN FRANCISCO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday told a group of newspaper executives that the United States should "close" its borders, calling existing enforcement against illegal immigration "lax."

A governor's spokeswoman, however, rushed to clarify his remarks, saying that Schwarzenegger actually meant that the borders should be made less penetrable, not literally sealed.

"It's a federal issue," Schwarzenegger said during a question-and-answer period following a speech to the Newspaper Association of America. "And the only thing that I can say and add to this is really close the borders. Close the borders in California and all across, between Mexico and the United States."

The borders should be closed, the governor went on to say, "because I think it is just unfair to have all these people coming across" while border enforcement is "lax." Moreover, he added, the key is to "enforce the law."

Press secretary Margita Thompson told reporters afterward that to Schwarzenegger, "closing the border would mean not make it porous - secure the border."

"However, in other people's language, it may mean something completely different," she said. "So, therefore, what he means is that we need to secure the border."

The Republican governor was not available for follow-up questioning about his remarks before the newspaper association, a nonprofit industry group that was meeting at the Fairmont Hotel.

Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, who has negotiated with Schwarzenegger over a driver's license bill for illegal immigrants, said he didn't take the governor's comment literally.

"I would find it difficult to believe the governor meant that when California and its prosperity and so many industries rely on the immigrant work force," he said.

But Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, D-Los Angeles, called on the governor to "ratchet down his rhetoric and retreat from this narrow-minded approach to immigration policy."

"Closing our borders to commerce and culture is an idea that comes from political extremists, not rational policymakers," Núñez added. "Even President Bush rejects the idea of a closed border with Mexico. We need an immigration policy that preserves our productive relationship with Mexico and respects the rule of law."

Núñez spokesman Steve Maviglio contended that Schwarzenegger may have been "inspired" by efforts of an Arizona group called the Minuteman Project that tried to halt illegal immigration at the border earlier this month.

"There's a significant bloc of votes in Congress, and significant activism, to close to the borders," Maviglio added. "So it wouldn't be out of school to think that he meant what he said."

Actually closing the border, Maviglio added, would devastate California's economy because Mexico is its prime trading partner.

Just before he won the October 2003 recall election, Schwarzenegger used similar language in an interview on Fox News.

Saying he wanted to work with other border governors on immigration issues, Schwarzenegger added, "I think if you talk to the federal government, we have to close the borders, make them tighter."
