Papable Latin Americans are not much better. Abortion remains technically
illegal in most of Latin America because of the Church, and complications
arising from illegal abortions
In other words, don't confuse the Ernesto Cardenal school with the Latin
American church establishment. FARC and ELN priest-guerillas
notwithstanding, the Church in Latin America is second only to the African
church in its conservatism. Believe it or not, when it comes to social
issues, the American Church is the defacto left.
Now, except for the few guerilla-priests, most of which I am willing to bet
are practical atheists, one has to question, from the point of view of
Marxism, if *any* Pope would have any positive effect...
That said, we live in interesting times indeed, with a Nazi as de-facto
leader of a billion people, and a grandson of a Nazi sympathizing corporate
hit man in command of the most awesome nuclear arsenal.
And I freaking decided to moved to the battleground instead of as far from
it as I could... oh well...

A Pope from the Third World might be good if Latin American but could be
terrifying if my impressions of the African church is correct.
My understanding is that the spokesmen of the African Catholics are
particularly PO-ed at what they see as the hypocrisy of the European and
American Church for not just excommunicating--er,
"expelling"--churchgoers over things like abortion, failure to crusade
sufficiently against homosexuality or the breakdown of the God-ordained
role of women, etc.
