Re: [Marxism] Re: Preliminary comments on Sheppard's memoir
Louis can correct me, but I think his point was not a literary but a
political one.
It wasn't about salacious detail on Barry's relationships, but rather about
the political implications of such relationships, in particular when they
involved people who were also political active.
I want to read the book nevertheless, but Louis comments made me think a lot
about how many leftist men reduce the contributions of the women in their
lives to beneath the shadows of their own stature, when in reality this is
seldom the case. This is something I have seen in bio after bio, and it is
indeed a politically problematic proposition.

Subject: [Marxism] Re: Preliminary comments on Sheppard's memoir
I think Brian Shannon is right about Barry's reticence to extensively
describe his relations with women and so forth.
I remember reading Tim Wohlforth's memoir, very interesting politically,
but with several "good parts" describing his passionate involvement with
the women in his life. The first thing I thought when I finished the
book was, "Well, I'm certainly glad I never dated that guy."
So I admit that when Barry asked me to help edit the memoir, my first
joking comment was, "No sex, okay?" So the lack of romance may be all my
fault, although he already seemed to be on that wavelength.
