[Marxism] How Haiti looks at John Brown
I've been following the discussion on John Brown and read the review in
the NY Times, which I didn't consider as hostile as some.
But let me take another slant and expose a bit of history.
The main boulevard in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, is named John
Brown Boulevard. It was so named by the president of Haiti during his
trial. Haiti also held a week of official mourning after he was hung.
For more detail, consult
http://www.iacenter.org/haiti/john-brown.htm
a chapter in "Haiti:A Slave Revolution", in which Sara Flounders develops
a very interesting thesis comparing Haiti in the 19th century with Cuba in
the 20th.
But she also presents some very compelling facts on Haiti's attitude and
support of John Brown.
