RE: [Marxism] John Brown, abolitionist
Not all uses of quotes need to be "scare quotes." In this case, I'm
just using "American Renaissance" as a generally accepted as referring
to a particular period in the development of American letters. I don't
claim to accept or reject this categorization and put it in quotes to
emphasize that this is not my formulation.
Indirectly, we are using Matthiessen's term, because the title of
Reynold's book is "Beneath the American Renaissance." It focuses on
"the subversive imagination" in that period and is intended, in part, to
be a response to Matthiessen. Reynolds seeks to understand the
experience of literary people generally at the time rather than to focus
on those who have later been designated literary super-stars.

I think some people in this field have described approaches like
Reynolds as "the new historicism."
