I think we have to look at this in more "dynamic" terms and not as a
thing in itself. If, after WW2, the "dream" of home ownership was
subsidized and sold to the working class, it is one of the indexes to
the deep structural transformations of the class itself, the "moving up"
in the ranks of the white proletariat, and the influx into cities and
manufacturing centers of black workers, financially and structurally
(due to redlining, bank loan/mortgage policies, etc.) unable to afford
home ownership. And at that time the struggle against such racist
restrictions was part of the overall class struggle.
In Detroit, where I spent a little time, and in Chicago where I spent
a lot, it would have been tough to correlate home ownership with degree
of class consciousness.
