[Marxism] Re: Comment on Barry Sheppard's book on the SWP in the 1960s
Dayne is on track about May 2, 1964, protest in New York City.
Progressive Labor initiated the protest through the May 2 supporters.
The SWP strongly supported and publicized the action. The Student Peace
Union at the University of Pennsylvania, which friends of the YSA such
as myself and Robin Maisel were leaders of, mobilized for the action,
which meant bringing up a couple carloads. I recall the action being
about 800 people, and we were very pleased with it.
Robin and I joined the YSA towards the end of the year, after supporting
the SWP campaign against Johnson and Goldwater.
So I don't know what Carlos meant about the SWP being so caught up in
"infighting about Cuba" that they couldn't be bothered with antiwar
protests. The debate over Cuba in the party had ended a couple years
before, although debate over other matters had continued until the 1963
convention, but that hadn't kept the party from supporting protests
against imperialist actions.
Carlos should get the book and read it. Then he can make whatever
comments he wants based on facts, rather than just putting one word
after another.
