An Ambitious Trip to Canada's Fourth World

Frequent /Left Hook/ contributor from the Canadian north, Macdonald
Stainsby, is soon embarking on an important and ambitious project to
highlight the conditions and experiences of a marginalized  people, who
stretch across vast frontiers but are often rendered invisible by
mainstream - and even left-wing - media neglect. He will visit
indigenous nations across Canada, which are engaged in continuous
struggle for dignity in the face of the relentless pressures of
"development" capitalism so often determined to destabilize and unseat
them. We urge readers and supporters of this journal to read Macdonald's
description of what this project will entail, why he is undertaking it,
(below) and to also seriously consider making a donation

The Fourth World is Right Here: Surviving the Nation Called Canada

The contradictions of contemporary times are very acute. They involve a
planet that is being exhausted of energy resources, namely but not
limited to petroleum. This same sphere that we all inhabit is
increasingly becoming unlivable for human beings and other life forms,
as unsustainable capitalist development continues to threaten livability
for the benefit of corporate profits and ill-conceived growth. The
conquest of populations who stand in the way of such profit continues,
using whatever means necessary to pursue higher and higher returns.

Colonization continues apace as ruling interests around the world
compete to see which masters will lord over a long term descent into a
systemic crisis for imperialism-- the death throes of global capitalism.
In places such as Palestine & Iraq, populations are having their very
homelands decimated in order that the interests of capital combined with
ideological fervor can be continued even if this defies the most basic
human rights. Environmental devastation is part and parcel of this
process: Whether it is the destruction of homes, the dispersing of
uranium dust particles into the air from the tips of missiles, the
dropping of biological plagues on the crops of heroic resisters like
Cuba or the flooding and soil erosion devastation wrought on the island
of Haiti from clear-cutting, the means to the pursuit of profit and the
expansion of capital know no bounds.
