I would offer that the decline of the organization is first, the product result 
of the
ebbing of the struggle that pushed the organization into being, a retreat in
the class struggle; and secondly, the failure of the organization itself to make
and lead a transition from a militant national ideology and practice, to a
class analysis and opposition.

Who can ever forget Huey P.  Newton's picture on the dollar bill, blazed across 
the
front page of the Black Panther Party newspaper?

I'd forgotten that incident. Needless to say any thorough history of the Latino 
movement of the period (including at MIA) would have to include documentation 
of all trends, for better and worse. Which gets back to the issue raised by 
Fred and Carlos yesterday about the BPP and other groups -- and why more was 
not left (pun intended) as a positive legacy.
