Not melt. Soften. There's a difference.
Think about bending metal. If you heat metal, it's easier to bend; it
softens. It doesn't have to melt to get to this point.
You can even experiment with a metal spoon and a match. Take two
identical spoons; bend one by hand. Try to gauge how much force you
used. Now, take the other spoon and hold a lit match or cigarette
lighter under it for a couple of minutes. Now bend it--you'll notice
that it takes a lot less force than the one without heat did. The metal
isn't melted, far from it--just softened.
