This is the same talking to cross-purposes as took place over the
Chartists or the Henry George movement or the CIO.
1. The problems not a "preachy" tone so much as religious "witnessing,"
ie., posturing for the benefit of the Holy Ghost or some such entity
other than the rational human beings who are reading what you write and
with whom you should be hoping to engage in a dialogue. Does anyone
seriously think that subscribers to a "Marxism" list are tree-hugging
liberals who need to be convinced about socialism? Does anyone
seriously think that those of us who view ourselves as socialists in the
Green Party haven't heard all of these commonplace criticisms of the
Green Party many, many times? If not, then the most obvious motive for
repeating them on this list in that way is "witnessing."
2. The criticisms aren't being raised as an invitation to dialogue. I'm
willing to discuss about anything with anyone, but not to with people
who don't want to discuss it with me. The recent posts made about the
Greens are simple assertions made as though they are self-evident truths
requiring no evidence. They amount to "yo' mamma," to which the only
proper retort is, "no, yo' mamma." Is there any point? (yawn)
3. As part of these assertions, we are told that you can't find
socialism and socialists among the Greens. I guess that explains why
they're uninterested in a dialogue. In their eyes, radicals who are
socialists among the Greens are just as invisible as we are to our
bosses. That fundamental affinity of approach should inspire a bit of
soul-searching....
4. What they are saying is simply irrelevant in this context. Even if
the several dozen Americans on this list associated with the Greens
would start wearing buttons that said "Build Working Class
Independence," it wouldn't matter a flying fish to the political
universe. In the real world, events are moving hundreds of thousands of
people through the Greens. Some of us want to be there to share in
experiencing this process.
Others, however, dismiss the Greens for failing to call themselves
explicitly "socialists," except for those that do who should be
condemned for not doing it loudly enough, except for those who are
openly calling themselves socialists because we're not doing it
independently of the Greens, etc., etc., etc. It is a methodology that
implodes the relevant universe into a singularity...
Marxamentalism is just another religion...one catering to that part of
the market that like opiates with a pseudoscientific tinge.
Solidarity!
Mark L.
