Picket the Mayors State of the City Speech!
Save Detroits City Services & City Jobs! Fight for a Fair Contract!
Tuesday, March 22nd, 6 PM
Orchestra Hall (Woodward, Just North of Mack Ave.)
On Tuesday, March 22, the Mayor will use his State of the City speech to
push his efforts to slash city services, jobs, wages and benefits. The
AFSCME City of Detroit Presidents have voted to picket this event.
Everyone should join this picket! Show the Mayor, City Council and media
that Detroiters are not second-class citizens, that city workers united with
the community will stop the attacks on city services and city workers.
The mayors plan is being challenged by AFSCME and other city unions. With
community support we have already forced the mayor to step back. Just as the
victory against Proposal E showed last year by getting organized, active
and fighting back, we can win.
When the Mayor scheduled his crazy bus service cuts, city workers held
rallies and mobilized hundreds of bus riders to a City Council Hearing. Now
the mayor has been forced to scale back the service cuts, and the 204 DDOT
layoffs have been reduced to 67.
Kilpatrick now claims that he never said he was going to cut 24-hour
service!
The current contract expires on June 30, 2005. The Mayor threatened 619
additional layoffs to try and force AFSCME to reopen the current contract
and agree to an immediate 10% wage cut (DOWOPs). The AFSCME Presidents
refused to reopen the current contract, and those additional layoffs have
not been issued.
Now the negotiations on our next contract are about to begin, and the
Mayors concession demands are back on the table. But the mayor and his big
business backers have not given up, just as they have not stopped their
attacks on our pubic schools. There is no done deal. What happens depends
on who fights hardest, smartest and longest. The fate of our contract, jobs
and our city depend on what you and your co-workers do now! Be there!
