I, for one, am very unhappy to see Julio's decision.

I agree both that it is unhappy, and the reasons you cite for it being
unhappy.

On the other hand, I have little respect for people who abandon debates and
debate space, as this is usually a sign of a lack of good faith, an capacity
to deal with disagreements. It is in essence the worse type of bureaucratic
behaivor.

Not even in Cuba do the bureaucrats run away in this fashion, but I have
seen too many Democrats in the USA behave in this way.

It is both an eloquent statement of the politics of Democratic fellow
travellers and the bankrupcy of that idea. Disagreement, even violent
disagreement, requires acknowledgement. When you disengage, you deny
acknowledgement, and hence establish a battle line.

Unite all that can be united rerquires a willingness to engage on the two
sides.

No one asked Julio to leave. Even Louis spoke in glowing (if somewhat
critical) terms about him. His decision is unilateral, and hence all the
blame lies squarely on his back.

To try to lay even an ounce of responsibility on those who disagreed with
Julio is simply stupid. Julio is the one denying himself a space for debate.
