Last note before the cab arrives. It is interesting to me to see that areas
supposedly under the iron grip of an occupier are, in fact, closed to the
occupier. I have in mind wartime Greece in parts of which the Germans were
unable to travel, and which, in fact, was the scene of a wartime national
election arranged by the resistance. The United States military has
re-learned that lesson in Iraq: some of the country is effectively closed to
them because of resistance activity.

I admit that this is not quite what David Walters had in mind when he wrote
of sections of Hamburg being off limits to Nazis, but it was suggestive, and
I thank David for the note.
