Hope nobody will fall upon me with "political correctness" issues,
but I hardly find a better beginning for this mail than this:
Seventy or eighty years ago, there was a brothel in Buenos Aires
where the girls were not exactly beautiful but very experienced and
imaginative at their job. When the customers complained at the
looks, the pimp used to answer "Watch 'em moving, not their faces".
We should all agree, I guess, that this was an interesting marketing
device for that particular commodity -sexual pleasure and not
aesthetic rapture- which a brothel is supposed to sell in the first
place to its male attendance. Well, I am afraid that same thing
could be said of _lousy_ movements made by pretty faced people, even
Leftist pretty faced people.
Isn't it interesting that the whole argument on Taiwanese
"nationhood" forgets the simple fact that while Taiwan can't match
(nor, of course, challenge) US hegemony, China can, either if
socialist or not? Thus, while Taiwan cannot become a "nation" in the
sense of a full grown, self-reliant, capitalist power, China can?
I have been following the kind of argument some CIA outfits like "Net
for Cuba" emit against Hugo Chávez. Last Monday they released a mail
charging him with being pro-capitalist and thus a rogue and
immediately after it, another which charged him with being anti-
capitalist and thus a rogue. While the second argument is clear and
sound ("our whores move nicely"), the first one is a "pretty faced
whore", and tries to cater to a particular kind of customer of the
imperialist brothel. Imperialists are not stupid, and they throw red
herrings of this kind across any good hearted Leftist's path.
The world, however, is not organized by good hearted people. What
really matters to the owners and rulers of "Net for Cuba" are the
movements, not the faces. That is, they do not care about
ideological coherence, but they want people to rally against Chávez,
who -at his own turn- challenges American hegemony in South America
not with words but with facts, including words that _should be read
as facts in a dialectical way, in the same way that facts should be
read as words_.
And in such a task, the NfC bosses will gleefully resort to anything
that makes Left Wing pro-Chávez supporters waver. That is, if you
support Chávez because he is "socialist", and then you realize he is
not, you will not support him any more. Which is exactly what
Washington wants. This is the deep truth beneath the Catholic dictum
"The road to Hell is paved with good intentions".
Incidentally: the article which proved that Chávez was for
capitalism explained that in spite of all his bravado on "socialism",
he was supporting capitalism --Chinese capitalism, that is!
"Net for Cuba" should be renamed "Net for USA", but then it would
lose its impact. Some "Net for Taiwan" may be produced now, which I
am sure many "Leftists" will like.
