[Marxism] Socialist tasks versus national tasks?
Maybe I misunderstood LP's point then. I was, really, responding to Carlos'
comments.
I think LT lays out the issue perfectly in the quote from Between Red and
White.
The problem with the quote as such is that it is specific to the point of war
and a workers state where the revolution is threatened. In this sense it has a
limited applicability to the overall of "...we also give full support to the
principle of self-determination...". It's recognized, it's a parameter, etc,
but like Louis stated originally, it does not mean an 'absolute'. We don't
adhere to this in the sense that it's a religeious mantra or the Talmud
(although, like the Talmud, it's debatable...).
My concren was over the discussion as it was leading to the broader issue of
democratic tasks, the counter-positionign of the this and 'socialist' tasks.
That is what I was really responding too.
Part of the other juxtaposition of socialist and democratic in Red and White is:
"socialist revolution versus self-determinatnion". And...
The broader discussion that comes up is "how can one achieve real self-
determination without going through socialist revolution?".
These are releated issues but not mutually inclusive, also. What we face in the
real world are peoples struggling for self-determination and they can achieve
this (not to mention to bigger issie of what 'self-determination' means in the
age of globalizing imperialism).
Just a few thoughts....
David
