Evo Morales,
and his Movement to Socialism, which is unpopular in Washington because
of its opposition to the campaign against drugs led by the United
States.
I love that quote. Washington hates Evo Morales, not because he wants
worker's control, nationalisation, and stands solid against the whole
neo-liberal program. Oh no, that is not it. Its the drugs!
Yeah sure. And when I walk outside I carry an umbrella, because of the
flying pigs' lack of potty training.
Although his position, and the Bolivian's left position, on the drug trade
is one shared by most andean and coca producing region's left, including the
FARC-EP.
I remember in 1995-6 (damn, the exact year escapes me!) in the OCLAE, the
FUPI from Puerto Rico proposed the OCLAE adopt a drug legalization and
medicalization program. It was met with a lot of resistance, in particular
from the host country groups (Dominican Republic) and Cuban delegations. It
didn't eventually pass, with the Cubans abstaining, and Bolivia, Colombia,
Peru, Ecuador and Puerto Rico a solid block against the rest.
It eventually created a lot of in-figthing in the FUPI and led to the
expulsion and splitting of the then leading chapter.
Yet, the FARC-EP articulated almost the verbatim position during the talks
with the government in the late 1990s, early 2000s and I don't believe it
was coincidence.
Some of the left-moralists should pay attention to that.
