RE: [Marxism] RE: Civilian Benefits for Veterans
I, for one, wouldn't join the conservative clamor against veterans'
benefits.
In one form or another, though, the issue's been around a long time.
The government paid veteran benefits in the form of special land grants,
but most of the veterans weren't going to go west and claim the land, so
it'd wind up getting gobbled up by land speculators. What seemed like a
specially good deal for vets wound up getting applied in such a way as
to screw them over badly.
If you look closer into a lot of this, I'd bet you'd find the same kind
of strange outcomes in their application. Usually, these things are
actually about accomplishing a goal other than helping the vets.
As to affirmative action, the application has been such that it's become
primarily a cosmetic matter for big companies, government agencies, etc.
with some benefits that are strictly secondary to the "protected
classes" they are supposed to benefit. However, I think it falls in the
same class as veterans' benefits in terms of changing anything.
