Re: [Marxism] Poor, white and pissed
Don't forget the "C" word. Cracker, that is.
Interestingly, I have never thought of "white trash" as refering to southern
whites only. The entire white population of New Jersey usually gets called
that too.
I have always taken "white trash" to be a Northern aristocratic WASP thing,
used to separate the "trash", presumed to be black, from the "white trash".
Even rich southern whites get called "white trash" by the likes of them. In
any case, "White trash" is most decidely of Northern origin and use.
Southern whites prefer "hick" or even "cracker" itself.
"Redneck" on the other hand was used very specifically to refer to rural
whites of the Appalachia, back when they were all miners and many were
trouble makers, even Wobblies and Socialists.
The etymology has been erroneously described as originating from having
their necks red from the sun. Thsi would be true if they were farmers, but
this was not the case, most were miners; it most probable came from the red
bandanas they put around their necks to use as masks in the mines.

there was a cool text several years ago by jim goad, *rednick manifesto*,
that addressed these issues. it's hard to locate goad politically.
sometimes,
he reads like a nascent socialist; at other times, a reactionary. but
nonetheless worth the time just for his taxonomy re: the distinctions b/w
"hicks,"
"rednecks," "white trash," and such.
