about [Marxism] (Spiegel) BUSH VISITS EUROPE: How Good is the Trans-Atlantic
n> European cities are preparing for the Bush visit. Here, the small
n> German town of Mainz prepares for Bush's several-hour stop-over.
Well, unfortunately, the form of the preparations and their
consequences are not mentioned.
The security measures for the Bush visit will quite surely bring
total chaos to the whole Rhein-Main-Region west of Frankfurt, or a
complete standstill.
Several important highways (Autobahn) are completely closed in both
directions between 7 and 10 in the morning and 15 to 19 hours in the
evening; between those total closures, there will be a gigantic
roundabout of several highways, counterclockwise, while the clockwise
direction will be closed. Links to maps see at the end of this
message. Oh, the times have changed according to a press release
today: 8:30 till 10:30 and 17 to 19 hours. A little less ...
Ship movements on the Rhine near Mayence and the last part of the
Main river are prohibited all day.
"General aviation" aircraft, i.e. those flying by sight, are
forbidden in a diameter of 60 km around Mayence.
Commuter trains (S-Bahn) which travel near the prospective route
will be stopped for about an hour. Long distance trains are probably
also affected.
The inner city of Mainz (Mayence) is completly closed for the day;
businesses are orderd to close their shop. Parking is prohibited in
this area starting Tuesday evening in this area and along the routes
the the Bush cavalcade might take.
People living there are ordered to remove objects near the street
or seal them off. Garages have to be cleared. Even a business selling
tombstones was ordered to remove his exhibits, because they might be
used -- standing 30 meters from the street -- as projectiles...
This morning I overheard a note on the radio that even the mobile
phone networks are being shut down during Bush's visit, but I have not
yet been able to get this confirmed.
Tuesday will see demonstrations against Bush and his war policies
in about two dozen cities all over Germany, and on Wednesday, 23
February, a demonstration in Mainz (Mayence) itself; to get that
together will be a tough challenge.
Besides, the display of material which might be viewed as an insult
to the US president is prohibited. The organizers were ordered to name
200 marshals, and hand over a list of their names and addresses to the
police. Banners have been limited to a maximum of 2 meters length (or
width, if you prefer...).
