apologies to raymond chase and the list for that problem i had signing
the online petition. it was entirely due to my FIREFOX browser - when i
went to the UFCW website via IE it was all there as expected. this
happens fairly frequently with FIREFOX (when i go to amazon.ca, the
browser does not load all i need to order a book, for instance) what may
i be doing wrong in my FIREFOX settings? help!!!

The weight of this sad time we must obey.
Speak what you feel, not what you ought to say.

i sent your email of yesterday (to the marxmail list) containing the
petition to a wal-mart CEO to about eighty of my friends. i went to the
website (of UCFW) just now to sign it myself. it wasn't obvious how to
do that from what i could see there. (No wonder none of my friends wrote
back saying they signed it, etc.)
can you tell me and the marx mailing list just where to go to sign the
petition, which, i assume, is an internet based one.
if there is no easy way, it confirms some of my old suspicions about
UFCW from my saskatchewan days --it was lazy and incompetent.

Steve and any others who may have had a problem signing:
To sign the Stop Wal-Mart's Union Busting petition click on the following
web address:
http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/walmart05
Your web browser should come up with the web page for the petition.
You could also copy-and-paste the above address on to the address/go space
of your browser if the above hyperlink doesn't work for you.
The petition form is in the sidebar box on the right side of the web page.
Fill in the form (required fields are marked with an *): Email Address*,
First Name *, Last Name *, Address, AddressLine2, City, US
State/Canadian Province (use pulldown menu), Zip/Postal Code, Country
(country may be other than US or Canada / use pulldown menu), and finally,
"Check this box if you would like to receive periodic updates or action
alerts." After you have filled in the fields on the form , double-click the
"Sign Now" button at the bottom of the form. If you have not filled in
your email address or other required field, a new screen will come up
requesting that you go back and make corrections on the form. If you have
filled out the form correctly, you will get a new web screen stating that
you have successfully signed the petition. You will also get an email
verifying that you have signed the petition.
I too found the petition software a little buggy, but the importance of
speaking out against Wal-Mart's union busting should push you to take care
and make sure that your protest is registered.
I was somewhat disappointed that the Quebec Federation of Labour (AFL-CIO)
did not call for a consumer boycott of Wal-Mart. There is much popular
support in Quebec for the unionised Wal-Mart workers in Jonquiere, Quebec.
But it has been pointed out by the UFCW that a boycott could screw-up union
certification at Wal-Marts in two towns near where I live, Brossard and
St-Hyacinthe, Quebec. Another factor in the equation is that the picket
lines of recently striking Quebec-government liquor store clerks were widely
ignored by booze-buying Christmas shoppers despite the fact that over 40% of
Quebec's workforce is unionised. Government liquor stores are the only
places that bottles of hard liquor can be purchased here.
