PS to my last message.

We WERE appalled at the damage we found in northern cities of Italy, such
as the suburbs of Milan - where he bombing had been carried out (by the
USAAF we were told - but actually often by the RAF - since the USAAF did
daylight bombing and were seen, and the RAF night bombing, so weren't) well
after the fall of Mussolini and the surrender of the Italian government -
but during the subsequent Nazi occupation of central and northern Italy.

The areas of devastation we saw in the north seemed to have very little to
do with military necessity - or even advantage !!

Bombing never won wars.....
