RE: [Marxism] Genocide and intentionality
Mark L:
However, by comparison, I see absolutely no point to these polemical
exchanges with academic pseudo-progressive neo-libs. Unlike the SWP,
they're not trying to build a group. In fact, I don't see how anyone
not a member of the club sees them as anything other than
run-of-the-mill Democrat.
Actually, the attack on Ward Churchill is just the latest in a series of
attacks going back over 10 years at least from the academic left involving
targets as far-flung as Yugoslavia, the Nader campaign, "anti-Semitism" on
campus, etc. It is really necessary to answer them politically, especially
since many of our subscribers are young graduate students and
undergraduates who are confronted by this sort of thing.
The other thing is that I am trying to refine my own thinking by a critical
engagement with both Ward Churchill and people such as Thomas Brown.
Getting to the bottom of questions like smallpox blankets, etc. is
necessary if you want to understand the indigenous experience in the USA.
When I debate slugs like Brown and company, I am forced to read scholarly
material. I know a lot more about things now than I did a week ago.
I see education as a paramount goal of people on this list, starting with
myself.
