[Marxism] France vs. America and the death of Arthur Miller

There will be many appreciations of Arthur Miller, who died last night at the age of 89, in the days to come.

Some--most likely most--Americans will be surprised to find that he was married to Marilyn Monroe for five years.

What? I thought that she was married to Joe DiMaggio, the great American baseball player! Here's a not untypical assessment.

"It very well might be the match of the ages, a romance that will go down in history as the most magical ever. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe provided Americans with a real life fairytale. Unlike most fairytales, it did not end 'happily ever after.' Yet, it ended in classic Joe DiMaggio fashion, the aching lover mourning for his beautiful bride. It’s the stuff heroes are made of..."

So why in America is this the great love story, while the five-year marriage with Monroe is ignored?

In France, it would be the other way around. Or, shall we say, the public would have a more “nuanced” understanding.

BTW, Miller’s autobiography "Timebends" is a somewhat confusing first read. If you read it again, its greatness as an autobiography of the man and his period is inescapable.
