Tariq Ali's recent book,  Bush in Babylon, gives an accessible short
survey of the history of Baathism and its relationship to the Communist
movement in Iraq.  For the more ambitious out there, there's Hannah
Batatu's prodigious  The Old Social Classes and the Revolutionary
Movements of Iraq (just now back in print), from which Ali and others
such as Gilbert Achcar have drawn.
