Subject: [Marxism] Conspiracy? (was XXXXX Bashfest 2005)

A correspondent wrote to me offlist:

It's occurred to me that some people might deliberately be trying to
disrupt the list. Now, I am NOT suggesting anyone in particular. However,
given the history of government surveillance and disruption of dissident
groups (e.g., Cointelpro), it wouldn't surprise me much if at least one,
and possibly more, of our correspondents were provocateurs.
Of course, there's probably not much we can do about it, except to bear
the possibility in mind and try to keep things from getting out of
hand -- as you're already doing.

I dont want to to add more fire to the flame, so to speak, but such behind
the scenes insinuations and cop-baiting, was indeed a prefered method of the
Cointelpro disruptions.

This was so because cop-baiting was a prefered method to quash dissent
within organizations of all revolutionary tendencies, and behind-the-scenes
innuendo a favorite way to process political desicions. It was a no brainer
for the state to join the two into a very effective disruptive technique.

The record is full of this, from the tragic like the Heaylite purges of "KGB
agents" and the implosion of the BPP, to the funny like the MIM's
accusations.

Of course, we have every reason to fear the state being disruptive, but we
must be humble enough to recognize that real differences do exist, and
furthermore, that the state doesn't have us too high in the priority lists.

sks
