[Marxism] Re: My review on environment; comments invited
I'm grateful to Patrick and Ben for their comments and also the material
they've pointed me to. This will help me sharpen up my formulations on
carbon trading, which is clearly required since one passage at least seems
to be open to different interpretations.
Just for the sake of clarification however, let me point out the last two
sentences in the passage Patrick quotes read as follows:
"I think a socialist government would need to use just such
mechanisms in its early stages, because we are not going to abolish the
market overnight."
Do comrades doubt that we'll have to use some market mechanisms in the
transitional phase?
But then: "Under the existing social order, however, they embody serious
dangers, for the market has more failures than just environmental ones."
>From here I go on to cite arguments not that different to what Patrick
cites ("carbon imperialism" etc) -- which as it happens, I got from an
article in Green Left Weekly. I will make this sentence much sharper so it
stands out.
For those who haven't read the review, I should also mention that it says
(again, perhaps not sharply enough) that the only way to save the planet is
to overcome human alienation from nature, which isn't possible without also
overcoming the alienation of labour -- in other words, it isn't possible
without socialism. This is the key message I've taken from Foster's "Marx's
Ecology".
