While using Thunderbird and Firefox under Windows should be a big
improvement over Outlook and Internet Explorer, one should never forget
that the underlying operating system is faulty at best.

I also wonder what Microsoft might do as it sees more and more people
abandoning their software. How hard would it be to do an "update" that
causes problems for troublesome competitors?

Serious computer users, now more than ever, should really be thinking
about dual-booting Linux. Its really not that hard to do anymore. My
sixteen year-old managed to do it without even asking me for help.
