I'm not sure what you think "Darwin's theory" is. The _fact_ of
evolution is a given in modern biology, and no reputable biologist
disputes that fact.

But Darwin's _theory_ is an attempt to _explain_ that fact, and that
theory is by no means "literally" accepted, whatever that may mean. For
a superb history of evolutionary thought read Gould's _The Structure of
Evolutionary Theory_.

The non-biologist probably needs a dictionary of biological terms, and
will have to sort of glide over some passages, but the book is readable
for the non-biologist.
