[Marxism] Asia Pacific International Solidarity Conference, Sydney, update: East Timor, New Zealand to be strongly represented
APISC 2005 Newsletter No 4
*3rd Asia Pacific International Solidarity Conference, 24-28 March,
2005*
*EAST TIMOR** OIL AND EAST TIMORESE POLITICS AT APISC 2005*
*Avelino da Silva*, secretary-general of the Socialist Party of Timor
(PST), has confirmed we will attend APISC 2005. The PST has just
participated in a series of local elections where it has increased its
vote ten fold over that which it achieved in the country’s first
elections. The PST has been involved in interesting experiments in rural
cooperatives movement as well as industrial dispute handling in Dili.
They have taken initiatives in setting up a school in international
politics and have just recently re-launched a new regular publication.
*Tomas Freitas*. An activist in the La’o Hamutuk, the East Timor
Institute for Reconstruction Monitoring and Analysis, based in Dili,
will also be attending APISC. He has been very active in the campaign to
secure East Timor’s sovereignty over its oil resources. He has also been
active on issues relating to World bank policy on land matters in East
Timor. He attended the World Social Forum in Mumbai in 2004.
There will also be workshops relating to the East Timor Justice campaign
against Australia’s oil grab over East Timor’s oil.
*NEW ZEALAND** Left to be strongly represented*.
Speakers from New Zealand now include:
· Matt McCarten, Maori Perty
· Mike Treen, a long-term activist on the NZ left
· Cath Casey, Auckland city council
· Philip Ferguson, the Anti-Capitalist Alliance
· International Socialist Organisation from N.Z.
