RE: [Marxism] Irish Catholics
Hi,
Pedantic indeed, since I do not support partition and Catholics do live in
Northern Ireland, alas. Such sloganeering hardly begins to tackle the real
issues I hoped to raise with my description of 'catholic' as a social
category within the six-counties of northern Ireland. Issues such as (1) the
effects of housing and employment on community division in NI, (2) the
ideological bigotry and political influence of the unionism of different
classes and community organisations on political conflict in NI, (3)
statistical readings of major community and political conflicts in NI
history, and (4) the international (Imperial and global) dimension of the
conflict in NI and these variable factors' relations to 'catholicism' in the
six-counties, all interest me. I would say that they might shed some light
on the discussion of Ireland for others on the list more than smug rhetoric
might. Sincerely no offence meant tho. Point taken!
JOE WROTE:
A pedantic point, perhaps, but only those supporting partition ever refer
to the occupied six >counties as Northern Ireland. By so doing you lend
legitimacy to an illegitimate state.
Joe
