RE: [Marxism] Irish Catholics
Hi,
Being a Catholic in Northern Ireland is not principally a religious
identity, it is a lived social category: particularly for those segregated
ghetto dwellers bearing the brunt of unionist bigotry.
ROBERT H. JACKSON WROTE:
I spent time in Ireland many years ago, and it is a beautiful country
with a very troubled past. Regardless of what one may think about the
Cathyolic church, after 1550 or so being Catholic in Ireland was an
act of resistance to the growing English role in the country and the
introduction of the Church of England into the country. I would argue
that in the face of conquest retaining a Catholic identity was also
maintaining a separate national identity. Robert Jackson
NESTOR WROTE:
Absolutely yes.
