Hi,

Actually, this is just what I was thinking on the matter. I believe the
irreligious hedonism Domhnall refers to below is distinctly located within
sections of the urban working class, and perhaps especially within sections
of the protestant urban working class. Given the state of the Northern Irish
economy, that is how it should be. In fact, I would suggest that this
embrace of hedonism has both positive and negative ideological elements (as
does hedonism generally). Furthermore, it is quite evidently not absent from
the catholic urban working class, with perhaps more negative social
consequences in their communities. (?). Sadly, 'intense' Protestant bigots
are certainly not absent from the Northern Irish political scence,
apparently. As for the latter's connections with American Fundamentalists-
the links are decades long and financial, organisational, and ideological at
their deepest roots. Needless, to say, they are the most right-wing bunch in
Ireland.
