[Marxism] Books on the Recent History of the Middle East
Hi,
Can anyone please suggest any books covering the recent history of the
Middle East generally, that is, from the beginning of the Twentieth Century
or after WW II?
I am especially interested in the development of Egyptian society from one
of the Middle East and Africa's most industrialised nations by the end of
the 1950s, to its current state of apparent powerlessness and economic
recession. To what extent is the defeat of independence movements in places
like Egypt responsible for the rise of political Islam there, or to what
extent is the latter's rise prominent? How have anti-colonialist politics
and international war impacted upon the course of economic development in
the Middle East in recent decades?
I appreciate any recommendations.
cheers.
