Howard Zinn's essay is outstanding. His article was
able to be published in the MIAMI HERALD where it is
able to reach and stimulate the thinking of people
whom we would not otherwise reach. The development
of popular consciousness is a PROCESS. Zinn is very
good at trying to address people at the level at
which they are, not at the level at which Marxmail
readers think THEY (Marxmail readers) are at. What
is necessary is to reach the broadest possible mass
audience and convince them first, that the war is
wrong, and second, that they need to take public
action to achieve that end. Zinn's contribution is
written with THAT in mind, similarly to the way
Michael Moore's material is written. Organizing is
the job of organizers. Educating is the job of the
educators. Zinn is first rate in that way. As to
his organizational abilities, I have no opinion.
He provides tools which organizers can use and we
need to be grateful for that.
The complaints Eli made were nitpicking, period.
Completely irrelevant to the general goal needed
of reaching a broad mass public.
Walter Lippmann
