[Marxism] Jamaica: Facts and figures on religion and politics
Jamaica: Facts and figures on religion and politics
Religion:
Religions:
Protestant 61.3% (Church of God 21.2%, Baptist 8.8%, Anglican 5.5%,
Seventh-Day Adventist 9%, Pentecostal 7.6%, Methodist 2.7%, United Church 2.7%,
Brethren 1.1%, Jehovah's Witness 1.6%, Moravian 1.1%), Roman Catholic 4%,
other, including some spiritual cults 34.7%
It is interesting to note that official figures acknowledge that more than a
third of the Jamaican population (34.7%) do not subscribe to Protestantism. The
category "other" is a shamed-faced way for the official statisticians to
conceal the fact that over one third of the Jamaican population are
non-religious (they say non-Protestant) and probably outright atheists.
Politics:

Election results: percent of vote by party - People's National Party (PNP) 52%,
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) 47.3%; seats by party - PNP 34, JLP 26.
The statement immediately above is the official version. These figures,
however, conceal some very interesting facts.
Here are a few such facts for general edification.
The total number of eligible voters in Jamaica is 1,653,703.
The total number of registered voters is 1,263,633.
So straight from the get-go 390,070 of the adult population refuse to
participate in the political farce that is parliamentary elections in Jamaica.
This is more voters than voted for either the JLP or PNP (see figures above).
This number represents 23.59% percent of those eligible to vote.
Only 734,628 of those registered to vote actually voted. This represents
58.14% of registered voters. That figure is 44.42% of those eligible to vote.
41.86% of registered voters did not vote.
55.58% of the eligible voters in Jamaica did not vote, that is to say, they
rejected both the PNP and JLP as their political representatives.
76.76% of those eligible to vote rejected the PNP as their political
representative.
79.03% of those eligible to vote rejected the JLP as their political
representative.
The PNP received only 30.37% of the registered votes
The JLP received a mere 27.44% of the registered vote.
To emphasize, 41.86% of the registered voters did not vote. This is a winning
plurality compared to the voter support that the leading parties received
respectively.
The PNP received 23.21% of the eligible votes.
The JLP received 20.97% of the eligible votes.
Again, for emphasis, 55.58% of the eligible voters rejected both the PNP and
JLP together. It is clear from these figures that most of the Jamaican
population is looking for an alternative to the JLP-PNP parliamentary bind.
Moreover, 34.7% of the population, which is a clear plurality in any major
election contest, is open to non-protestant ideology and presumably to
non-religious, scientifically driven, socio-political thinking.
Jamaica is fertile ground for proletarian politics.
Respect,
Aduku
