This German sentence has two potential differnet translations, neither
of which is the translation appended - although the point is still valid.
The first translation is "Whoever is a Marxist (i.e. whoever claims to
be a Marxist) has never understood Marx."
The other is: "Who a Marxist is is something that Marx neVer understood."
There is probably a dialectical joke here (in the German that is).
